Tractor in the horizontal casing well has small diameter, serving as a dragging device when the logging tools go through the oil tube in the horizontal well. Instead of a drill pipe, it sends the logging equipment to the destination formation relying on its traction to complete the logging jobs. It saves cost and time.

Tractor is composed of two parts: surface system and down hole tools, including down hole tractor, surface control system and the software.

1.   Surface System

The surface system consists of surface controller and portable PC. It can realize the following functions:

a.    Power supply the down hole tools

b.   Select different power supply modes for logging tool working or tractor working

c.    Control the drive back-up mechanism and traction mechanism

d.   Monitor the working state of back-up and traction devices

e.   Adjust the traction speed by changing the voltage

f.    Support the down electronic section and surface PC communication. The system consists of the following equipment:

2.   Down Tools

Downhole tools consist of six detachable parts, including upper centralizer, measuring sub (CCL and tension), electronic circuit section, back-up section, traction section, lower centralizer.

Tension Sub

Electronic Circuit Section

The main function of the electronic circuit section is to get the working power and control signal from the single core cable. It controls the working of down tools and send the working status of traction and measuring reading of tension sub to the surface system. Electronic circuit section is divided into five modules: mode control module, power module, communication module, control module, motor driver module.

Back-up Section

The motor (with reducer) drive mode and the electromagnetic clutch improve the security of back-up section. Under the control of electronic circuit section, the back-up section open and close the back-up arm.

Traction Section

The traction section is the final implementing agency of the tractor. It is composed of three parts, such as the power assembly, the main traction assembly and auxiliary traction assembly. It makes the tractor to walk back and forth in the casing well. The back-up device opens four arms whose four driving wheels contact tightly the site wall and the main motor drives four wheels to walk along the wall of the well.

As the underground environment is extremely complex in the horizontal wells, successful operation depends on the reliability and security of the tractor. The back-up section applies the electromagnetic clutch device, which ensures that the back-up arm automatic withdraws when the circuit fails. The weak point of the cut-off method can be adopted in the right position, so as to lead the tractor and down tools to the ground in case of getting stuck in the well.
